Specimens of Eccentric Circular Turning, With Practical Instructions For Producing Corresponding Pieces in the Art. John Holt Ibbetson, Esq. Third Edition. (c.1838). London. Original Patterned Boards with Label. Enclosed in Custom Three Quarter Leather Solander Box. Fine.
Another rare book with fascinating original board covers. The classic Ibbetson title and of the few we have seen, always with some differences between the books we have observed. Very tastefully presented once again in a large octavo (19.5cm by 26cm by 4cm deep) solander box, three quarter dark brown morocco. Matching cover and interior cloth marbling. Raised band separate contrasting gilt titled compartments: SPECIMENS IN ECCENTRIC CIRCULAR TURNING; JOHN HOLT IBBETSON and 1838 with embossed gilt emblems in between. The Ibbetson itself. Octavo, 15cm by 23cm. Original brown boards with relief patterns of leaves and lightning bolts (?, a fascinating and eclectic patterning). Affixed front cover pastedown with extracted title and price Twenty Shillings". Frontis, two folding plates of machinery. Title page with concentric sample; verso imprint of A. Hancock, Holborn (printed his earlier 1820 work also). Paged: i-iv, 5-176, 2 interleaved plates, six engraved intaglio plates, ten concentric pattern plates near back. There are also four concentric circular elements on separate slips, apparently once pinned into the top of the title page of this book; these now smartly slipped into a square recessed compartment within the solander box. Well illustrated throughout with concentric patterns, circles and other geometric forms. Internally quite fine, mostly petty impairments or slightly skewed pages as originally bound. Very much superior content to a cited example owned by J. Roy Pennell and sold by Kolbe in 1996. The book's arrangement is a bit complex and the science of course more so, of course that is for the scientist to discern. However, the concentric, eccentric and other type circular rulings. That are heavily illustrated, make this is an enticing and quite visual reference. Finely enclosed in a beautiful solander box and boasting rather distinctive original covers.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
