How to Detect Forged Bank Notes. By W. H. Smith. London, 1855. Bound in Modern Cloth. Internally Fine.
Small octavo, 13.5cm by 21.5cm. Bound smartly in modern violet moiré cloth, gilt spine titled FORGED BANKNOTES W.H. SMITH 1855. Contents are complete, missing original card covers and page order slightly differs. Title, verso with imprint of Chambers & Sons, dedication (blank), inserted two uniface color plates of lithographed old and new Bank of England 5 Pound watermarks, 3-16 (p4 blank). Three watermark samples interleaved between 6-7. Very rare work, diminutive and attractive. Externally virtually new cloth, but internally showing some use. Some internal flaws, reattachments with archival tape, some brittleness at perimeter of some pages and library notations. Very well pedigreed. Ex blind stamped Baker Library Harvard University and penciled verso title page "Columbia University Library". The opposing plates at the front of the book are quite fetching. Ex Morris Library Sale and Adams Library Sale, both by Kolbe. Excellent presentation of this important content work on Smith's "light and share watermarking".
Estimate: $600.00- $900.00
