How to Detect Forged Bank Notes. By W. H. Smith. London, 1855. Original Blue Card Covers. Good.
A second example of this important work on watermarks. As originally made, however with the caveat that this great rarity has seen some use. Small octavo, 14.0cm by 22.0cm. Original blue card covers, front gilt titled, arms with price and distributor. Complete. Inside front cover, inserted two uniface color plates of lithographed old and new Bank of England 5 Pound watermarks as positioned properly. Title, verso with imprint of Chambers & Sons, dedication (blank), 3-16 (p4 blank). Three watermark samples interleaved between 6-7. Inside back cover with John Smith Bank Note Mold Maker advertisement. Worn, considerably so on the front cover, some mixed tape repairs on brittle pages. However, very rare and original format and contents. The plates are excellent. Only two copies of Smith tracked by the consigner as sold since 1980 and both are in this sale. An exceptional pedigree: Boys Town Philamatic Center (pastedown back of first plate), Armand Champa Library Part IV, November 28, 1995, lot 4248 (tag enclosed). Ex David Sklow Sale February, 2009, lot 705. Achieves big points for originality and pedigrees.

Estimate: $400.00- $500.00
