FRANCE. Framed Napoleonic Medals, ca. 1800.
8 pieces in lot. A pair of black enamel and gilt frames, each displaying four bronze and lead uniface cliches. The first is about 15 x 5 1/2 in. and includes: Cliches of the Battle of Marengo Medal (Bram-40), The Empress Josephine Medal (Bram-476), Emperor Napoleon Medal (Bram-299) and the Passage of St. Bernard Medal (Bram-35). All are 65 mm as listed by Bramsen. The second frame is slightly larger and includes: Arrival of the royal Family in Paris medal, 1789 (Jul-14), Empress Maria-Louise medal (Bram-1028), Emperor Napoleon medal (Bram-475) and a storming of the Bastille medal (Hen-23). The first and last pieces measure about 84 mm and the other two are about 65mm. These cliches were produced by the sculptor Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822), who sold cliches of his medals in his Paris studio where he was allowed to produce and sell electrotype copies of the Paris mint medals he had designed. These were popular decorator items at the time and were available as single pieces or in cases or display frames such as these. Two hundred years ago they were proudly displayed by Frenchmen who wished to show their appreciation for their country's history and today they serve the same purpose for numismatists and historians. The frames are sound although they have the expected small nicks and scratches. The glass is intact; however, the paper backing to the frames has been removed and copper hook-eye loops with a wire for hanging have been added. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. UNCIRCULATED.
Estimate: $300.00- $400.00
