GREAT BRITAIN. Rover Cycle Company Gold & Enamel Award Badge, 1897.
40.6 x 25.8 mm; 14.12 gms. 18 karat. Round central medallion with old veiled portrait of Queen Victoria to left on blue enamel field. Garter around inscribed, "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE", crown above with red enamel lining and loop, crossed thistles with branches below; Reverse: Hinged pin with clasp, inscription, "PRESENTED BY THE/ ROVER CYCLE Co/ LIMITED/ COVENTRY 1897." Hallmarks, "V + S" (Vaughton and Sons), Crown and 18, Anchor (Birmingham), and "X" the year mark corresponding to 1897. The Rover Cycle Company made bicycles in the late 19th century and later produced automobiles becoming the Land Rover company we know today. VERY FINE.
