PERU. 8 Reales, 1823-JP. NGC Fine Details--Obverse Scratched.
KM-117.3; FC-85b. VERY RARE. Overstruck on a Republic 1822 "Peru Libre" 8 Reales (KM-136). On several occasions during the War of Independence, control of the city of Lima shifted back and forth between Royalist and Republican forces. Under the command of generals Canterac and Valdez, Royalist forces successfully re-captured the city on June 18th, 1823. Mandatory financial contributions were enforced upon the people of Lima in support of the Royalist cause. Contributions collected in the form of the "Peru Libre" Republican type 8 Reales were then overstruck with conventional colonial dies bearing the effigy of Ferdinand VII. Prior to evacuating the city on July 16 1823, Royalist forces shipped much of the minting machinery to the city of Cuzco, before setting fire to the mint in Lima. Very interesting and historically significant, as it's minting can be pinpointed to a brief period of just under a month during the War of Independence. Good strike with a solid portion of the under type still visible, lightly toned, several scratches. NGC Fine Details--Obverse Scratched.
