From David Sear, Roman Coins and Their Values, Millenium edition, 2000: "The explanation of the abbreviation PNG has not been satisfactorily resolved: Pondus Nummorum Restitutum (the weight of the coinage restored) and Ponderum Norma Restitua (the standard of the weights restored) have both been suggested.
