Pedro II overstrike revalidation 500 Reis ND (1688) XF40 NGC, KM-unl., Gomes-114.02. An Evora mint Cruzado (400 Reis, Gomes-101 for type) countermarked by edict of March 22 1663 with "S00" punch (thus revalidated for 500 Reis), and overstruck by edict of June 14, 1688 with a new circular legend with a leaf edge design applied to prevent clipping. The aforementioned edict of June 1688 mandated to recall all coins previously countermarked in 1663. The underweight clipped ones would be withdrawn and melted and the full-weight ones would be overstruck with new circular obverse and reverse legends and have an edge design (to prevent subsequent clipping) applied and put back into circulation. This operation was performed at the Lisboa and Porto mints, the latter officially reopened on June 15, 1688 (one day after the edict authorizing the overstrike) for that purpose. A choice example of this fascinating and rare double countermarked issue, with handsome dark old patina and little actual wear after the overstrike, and the rare Evora mint base coin obviously adding to its desirability.

Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
