Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1763 So-J AU55 NGC, Santiago mint, KM23. A superb specimen for the denomination, with handsome reddish toning and only the slightest friction evidence on the higher points. Essentially a very rare one year type coin with about 12 confirmed examples: per Carlos Jara, a total of only 11,014 pieces were struck for both dates of 1763 and 1764 with the latter having a single confirmed surviving specimen, while the 1765 date listed in Krause does not exist. Struck from a single pair of dies with the reverse showing clashing evidence as is sometimes the case; the Eliasberg specimen graded AU50 also shared this characteristic and is the only other piece certified by NGC. The only unquestionably finer piece known to the cataloger is the ex-Norweb coin, so the present coin clearly ranks as a choice specimen of this very elusive and legendary rat-nose type.

Estimate: 8000-10000 USD
