Provisional Republic copper Proof Pattern 5 Centavos 1870 P-CT Proof AU Details (Improperly Cleaned) NGC, Potosi (?) mint, KM-X1a (previously KM-Pn1a). An attractive example of this very rare pattern, with the mishandling evidence noted in the designation not too distracting. Long thought to have been struck in New York, numismatists now tend to agree that the 1870 series of Cuban essais or patterns were in fact struck at the Potosi mint (hence the "P" letter on the date side) with dies engraved by Clemente Torretti (his initials being the "C. T." letters). An important opportunity for the specialist since the 5 Centavos denomination is the rarest (with only six examples thus far certified by NGC).
Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
