Ecuador
Republic Real 1834-GJ MS64 NGC, Quito mint, KM13. A stunning example for this debased and very crude issue, essentially Gem Uncirculated will amazingly lustrous surfaces and razor sharp strike. Being .666 fineness and produced in small amounts, pre-decimal coins struck at the Quito mint are all very scarce in any grade approaching Mint State. Moreover, this "ECUADOR EN COLOMBIA" type was struck for only three years (starting in 1833) and is thus much scarcer than the later "REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR" type produced in significantly greater numbers. The present example was obviously carefully preserved since its minting over 150 years ago. In all probability, it represents the nicest specimen of this type in existence, and is also graced with a legendary pedigree. Truly a prize for any cabinet of Latin American coins. Ex-Eric P. Newman collection.
