Ecuador
Republic gold 4 Escudos 1836-FP AU55 NGC, Quito mint, KM19. A handsomely preserved specimen, close to Mint State with lustrous surfaces. The strike is strong with all details immediately apparent to the naked eye while the handling marks are well within the confines of the assigned grade. The 4 Escudos denomination was first struck in Quito in 1836 to replace the previously struck 1 and 2 Escudos due to the massive appearance of counterfeits of those two denominations manufactured in Cuenca (Ecuador) and Peru. It was authorized by Decree of July 14, 1836. Apparently, the last date struck was that of 1841, since no specimens of later years are known, albeit the denomination was still considered in the monetary laws of 1844-1845. All dates are at least very scarce, and attractive type coins such as the present example are decidedly elusive and most desirable. This lovely specimen should attract strong competition.
