Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND VF35 NGC, Melle mint, MEC-728 var, MG-268 var, Dep-605 var. CARO • LVS, name arranged in two lines with pellet between / METOLO, letters arranged in circle around a sunburst, the L in the form of a hook and the O's in the form of lower-case b's. Well-centered for the issue with original surfaces toned darkly in patches. This is an intriguing example, technically uncataloged with this reverse, although the Melle series under Charlemagne is known for numerous reverse varieties. In the literature, the closest type to this specimen is MEC-728 in Grierson/Blackburn, although in place of the compound "OT" character in the published example, this piece has a trefoil pellet character standing in for the E, separated from the T. Rare and highly desirable for the specialist in the Carolingian series.
