Richard II (1377-99) gold Noble ND MS62 NGC, London mint, Type I Lettering with French titles, Cross pattée mm, S-1654, North-1302 (S). Crowned king with sword and shield standing facing in ship, an annulet above the ship's sail / Floriate cross with R in central quadrilobe, trefoils in spandrels. Somewhat doubled on the obverse with a strong central reverse strike, the NGC attribution of this piece to S-1655 is incorrect. The surfaces remain lustrous although the smallish flan allows for portions of the legend to veer off-flan (including most of the annulet above the sail which defines this variety). An attractive example issued early in the London period, likely within a year or two after the last of the recut Edward III dies were worn out.
