Edward VI (1547-53) gold 1/2 Sovereign 1550-51 VF35 NGC, Tower mint, Coinage in the Name of Henry VIII, Martlet mm, S-2391, North-1865 (R). An irregularly-struck example, as is typical, with most of the legends and only portions of the design clear. Edward's early coinage, both silver and gold, is known for its poor manufacture and debased appearance; the silver in particular was clearly of poor intrinsic quality, even when new; gold was struck in smaller quantities, a bit more carefully, but relatively few boldly and evenly struck coins exist. This piece displays more poorness of manufacture than wear.
