James I gold Laurel (20 Shillings) ND (1621-23) MS63 NGC, S-2638A. Third coinage, Thistle mm. Small, rounded head. A spectacular issue featuring the laureate, armored bust of James I and long cross over square shield. Of notable mention are the exceptionally strong centralized details, particularly on the portrait and shield, with slightly softer legends. Upon closer inspection, the excellence of this specimen continues with dazzling, golden-honey surfaces that exhibit full-bodied luster. A short-lived issue, this new, reduced-weight 20 Shillings denomination temporarily replaced the gold Unite. Avidly sought and seldom encountered, especially in this deluxe quality.
