George III countermarked Dollar ND(1797) F12 NGC, London mint, KM630. An oval George III counterstamp over a Mexico 8 Reales 1754 Mo-MF, Base coin about Fine, counterstamp extremely fine, deeply impressed and attractive. While contested by some scholars such as H. Manville - see "The Bank of England Countermarked Dollars, 1797-1804" in BNJ 70 (2000), the oval countermark issue over Pillar type Spanish Colonial coins is nevertheless heavily sought after by collectors. The present example over the rarely encountered Ferdinand VI pillar 8 Reales undercoin shows a good impression of the stamp and boasts an important pedigree. Rare and important for the specialist of the series. Ex Mantegazza collection (Spink London 3/1996, lot 61, described as "extremely rare on a coin this early").
