Elizabeth II 8-Coin Proof Pattern or Off-Metal Presentation Set 1966, Brass 1/2 Penny PR61 NGC, S-4158 (all for style)Brass Penny PR62 NGC, S-4157Copper-Nickel 3 Pence PR63 NGC, S-4153Bronze 6 Pence PR64 Red and Brown NGC, S-4149Bronze Shilling - Scottish Crest - PR63 RB NGC, S-4148Bronze Shilling - English Crest - PR63 RB NGC, S-4147Brass-Nickel Florin PR63 NGC, S-4146Brass-Nickel 1/2 Crown PR62 NGC, S-4145KM-Unlisted, S-Unlisted, Freeman-Unlisted. A highly intriguing set, produced for unknown reasons with its intact box, and using the standard designs for the year, with each example being rendered in off-metal format. A search for similar sets has yielded no results, leading us to believe this set to be of the utmost rarity. However, we were able to locate a single example of the penny denomination in brass, offered by Heritage in 2009, where the cataloger at the time, Bruce Lorich, long-time British specialist and dealer, noted that he had never seen (or presumably heard of) another example. He speculated the piece was a possible trial for "die testing" or an alloy change. With the offering of this intact set however, those reasons can almost certainly be dismissed, with "mint sport" or for presentation purposes likely being the culprit. Whatever the case, this set is easily among the most interesting issues of Elizabeth II type that we have seen, and for the collector focused on 20th century rarities, especially those of Elizabeth II, one can hardly think of a greater conversation-piece.

Estimate: 4000-6000 USD
