Charles III 4 Reales 1786/5 NG-M VG Details (Scratches) NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM35.2 (unlisted date). A rather wholesome specimen of this very rare date, with all essential details quite visible including the bold 1786/5 overdate. Only four confirmed specimens are known, thus among the rarest bust silver issues of the entire Guatemalan series. Unlisted by all major references including Burzio, Pellicer and Palmer-Almanzar, the discovery coin (a holed example but with a clear date) of this issue was pictured in the otherwise unremarkable work of Siliezar Ramos ("Catalogo de monedas y medallas de proclama de Centroamerica y Panama", 1977). Carlos Jara's upcoming reference on the bust Charles III NG issues indicates a measly mintage of 1,666 pieces for this date, by far the lowest of the entire series, which gives a logical explanation for its elusiveness. An important opportunity for the specialist, unlikely to repeat itself in the following years. Ex-Whittier collection (Heritage Auctions 6/2006, lot 16978 for $2,300).From The Santa Maria Collection
