Guatemala
Charles IV gold 4 Escudos 1789 NG-M VF20 PCGS, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM48. An attractively colored coin with still substantial detailing present. Slight tooling evidence at 12 o'clock, essentially hidden from view and not obtrusive. An extremely rare type, with less than 5 specimens known and only 2 offerings in the last 20 years: this coin, Ex-Haberthuer (SBC 1/1996, lot 2559) and the Ex-Caballero de las Yndias example (Aureo 4/2009, lot 287, reportedly ex J. Schulman 2/1957, lot 1975). These two appearances could well correspond to the same specimen since they appear essentially identical although the most minute differences seem to appear in the denticles area on the reverse at 12 o'clock based on the Aureo illustration. If these are indeed two different coins, it would prove that the Nueva Guatemala mint equipment to produce the planchets for this denomination was flawed since, as noted previously, said planchets appear exactly similar and not fully round on both of the aforementioned coins. Despite the noted flaw, a quite decent example of this incredibly elusive issue. From The Santa Maria Collection
