Guatemala
Estado de Guatemala Provisional Real 1829 NG-M AU58 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM75. Very close to Mint state with only the faintest friction evidence on the higher points and lustrous surfaces. A planchet bulge to the right of the Ceiba tree exacerbates said slight friction but this specimen hardly circulated. KM points to a purported Quetzaltenango origin although this issue was struck in Guatemala City - with silver donated by the churches - per instructions of President Mariano de Aycinena during the siege of the city by the forces of General Morazan in February of 1829. It is distinguished from regular issues of the Central American Republic by its legend "Estado de Guatemala" and its slightly reduced fineness (.750 fineness as opposed to the 0.903 fineness of those regular issues). Most of the minted specimens were later recalled after Aycinena's surrender on April 14 of that same year due to the aforementioned reduced fineness. Its is thus a very scarce to rare one-year type. Note that the rarity of this issue is clearly overestimated in KM ("4 known") when a more accurate figure is less than 30 confirmed surviving specimens. Nevertheless, its is certain that few of those if any will outshine the present example. Currently the single finest example certified by NGC, and undoubtedly among the very finest known of this very scarce and interesting necessity coinage. From The Santa Maria Collection

Estimate: 2500-3000 USD
