Guatemala
Central American Republic 8 Reales 1829 NG-M MS62 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM4. Struck from rusty obverse dies, as usually seen for this date but very attractively toned and well struck. 1829 was a tumultuous year for Guatemala, with the capital city (including the mint) under siege by General Morazan, which resulted in particular in the issue of the Provisional 1 Real of 1829. Whether the 1829 dated dies were left at some point to the open and subject to deterioration due to the political turmoil is object to conjecture but certainly appears likely from the evidence of the coins themselves: in the cataloguer's experience, most of the 1829 NG-M 8 Reales show some degree of corrosion evidence on the obverse. Another possibility is that the 1829 dies were used well into 1830, which would in turn help to explain the rarity of the latter date. In any case, attractive specimens of the 8 Reales 1829 NG-M are very challenging and desirable. The present example is certainly among those. From The Law Collection
