Provisional Government mule 2 Reales (18)23/(18)24 (PM)-PY VF35 NGC, Tegucigalpa mint, KM15 (for basic type but this mule unlisted). An attractive example of this crude provisional type, with a full (18)23 date on the obverse, and half of the (18)24 date on the reverse below the cross. The PM-PY imitation cobs were struck at the Tegucigalpa (and also Leon mint in Nicaragua, the present coin being undoubtedly a Tegucigalpa issue based on the design of the trefoil-like devices atop the pillars) in 1823-1824. This cob design was adopted after the failure of the round 2 and 1 Reales issues of 1823 (cf. KM 5, 11, 12 and 14) in an effort to provide a closer imitation of the cob coinage then found in circulation (most of which came from Potosi). The "PM" initials (only the P is seen at the top left on the obverse) stand from Moneda Provisional, while the "PY" ones (flanking the (18)23 date) are simply replicating the ones found on Potosi's 1723 and 1724 cob issues, in a further intent to mimic those issues. This coin was probably minted in early 1824, using leftover dies from the previous year. Extremely rare, and only the second specimen seen by the cataloger.
Estimate: 2000-2500 USD
