Honduras
Republic copper-nickel Proof Essai Real 1869-E PR63 NGC, Paris mint, KM-Pn9. Choice Proof with iridescent toning and very lustrous surfaces. Part of the series of Essais struck at the Paris mint for the nickel coinage dated 1869-1870 that was struck for Honduras under supervision of the Dreyfus company and begin to circulate in 1869. That nickel coinage was planned to recall the low quality copper coinage then in circulation but ended in miserable failure: as early as December of 1869, the Honduras government was forced to reauthorize the circulation of the old copper coins in certain locations. While the circulation issues of the nickel coinage are common, the patterns dated 1869 such as the present example are quite rare. Only a few specimens of the 1 Real 1869 Essai are known, with the present coin being the nicest of the two that have been offered in recent years (the other being the Ex. Farouk - Whittier piece, graded MS62 NGC, see Heritage Auctions 6/2006, lot 17207 for $1,200).

Estimate: 1500-2000 USD
