SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysius I (405-367 BC). AR decadrachm (36mm, 40.70 gm, 6h). Struck ca. 404-390 BC. Reverse die signed by Euainetos. Charioteer, holding goad in right hand and reins in left, driving racing quadriga left; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath; below exergual line, aspis (shield), greaves, cuirass, and crested Attic helmet, all connected by horizontal spear; [A]ΘΛA below / ΣΥ-ΡΑ-Κ-ΟΣ[-ΙΩΝ], head of Arethusa left, wreathed in grain ears, wearing triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; four dolphins around, and [EY-A]IN[E] along lower edge. Gallatin dies R.III/C.II; HGC 2, 1299. SNG ANS 363. Struck on a broad flan from fairly fresh dies. Porosity overall and areas of heavy corrosion, mainly in fields; face and neck of Arethusa smoothed, area around base of neck possibly repaired. By no means a choice example, but still fairly attractive in hand and quite affordable for type. Detail of Good Very Fine.

Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
