Like other river deities, he is usually depicted as a man-faced bull, with a particularly sensitive rendering on this tetradrachm of the Acarnanian Confederacy, a multi-city league on the southern Illyrian coast. While usually seen as benevolent, Achelous battled Heracles for the favors of the beautiful nymph Deianeira and lost one of his horns in the match; he had to trade one of the horns of the Amalthean Goat to get it back.
