Nero (AD 54-68), with Agrippina Junior (died AD 58). AR denarius (19mm, 3.22 gm, 3h). Rome, AD 55. NERO CLAVD DIVI F CAES AVG GERM IMP TR P COS, jugate busts right of Nero, bareheaded and with drapery at back of neck, and of Agrippina, draped / AGRIPP AVG DIVI CLAVD NERONIS CAES MATER, quadriga of elephants left, bearing two chairs holding Divus Claudius, radiate right, holding eagle-tipped scepter, and Divus Augustus, radiate, seated facing, head right, holding patera and scepter; EX S C in left field. RIC 7. RSC 4. BMCRE 8. CBN 13. Rare! Toned Good Very Fine. Agrippina's rapid loss of influence after successfully engineering Claudius' death and Nero's accession to the throne, culminating in her expulsion from the palace by Nero, is reflected in the gold and silver coinage of Nero's first regnal year. Agrippina is dominant in Nero's first coin type as emperor: Her titles occupy the obverse, relegating Nero's titles to the reverse, and her portrait faces Nero's. In the second type, seen here, the titles changed places, Nero's legend now occupying the obverse, and the portraits became jugate, with Agrippina behind Nero. Thereafter, Agrippina was entirely excluded from the coinage.
