Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine and Heraclonas (AD 610-641). AV solidus (21mm, 4.45 gm. 6h). Constantinople, 9th officina, dated IY 10 (AD 636/7). Crowned figures of Heraclonas, Heraclius, and Heraclius Constantine standing facing, each holding globus cruciger / VICTORIA AVGЧ Cross potent set on three steps; monogram to left, I (date) to right; Θ//CONOB. Sear 761. DOC 36 variant (this officina unlisted). NGC Choice MS 5/5 - 5/5.The "Three Kings" solidus type depicting Heraclius and his two sons, Heraclonas and Heraclius Constantine, was issued in the midst of the bitter Byzantine-Sasanian War of AD 610-638, in which the empire fought for its very survival. The imagery recalls the New Testament "three kings" of the East who visited the infant Jesus. At a time when Heraclius was attempting to recover Jerusalem and the rest of Israel from the Sasanians, the visual reference to the Gospel accounts was surely intended to bolster the Christian cause in the first of the "Holy Wars."

Estimate: 800-1200 USD
