Sicily. Federico II (1197-1250) gold Augustalis ND VF Ex-Jewelry, Messina mint, minted after 1231, Fr-134 (under Brindisi), MEC-514 var, MIR-59 var, Spahr-99. • IMP ROM | CЄSAR AVG •, laureate bust right / + FRIDE | RICVS, eagle left with head right. A rare type in any condition, this example has unfortunately seen use in a jewelry setting. There is a fairly significant abrasion across Friedrich's cheek and the surfaces are unnaturally bright. Numerous small test cuts are also noted along the edges. Listed by Friedberg under Brindisi, we know this example was produced in Messina by the lack of pellets to either side of the eagle's head. Another major variety, also from Messina, features annulets in place of the pellets in the obverse legend. These pieces do not appear at auction often and for the collector of Sicily or of Holy Roman Imperial issues in Italy, this is an uncommon opportunity.
