Republic Caps and Rays 8 Reales 1866 A-DL AU55 PCGS, Alamos mint, KM377, DP-As04 ("Very Rare"). Variety with "I0" instead of "10" in the indication of the fineness. Essentially Mint State (also see comment following the noted pedigree) with no discernible friction on the higher points, rather well struck (DP: "traditionally... somewhat weakly struck on the eagle's breast") and with attractive rich dark patina as many of the coins sharing this famed provenance. A very rare issue, extremely rare and desirable in this charming preservation, a worthy candidate for finest known. Ex-Damon collection-Ponterio (11/2009 auction, lot 9798 for $3,500, where originally graded MS61 by NGC).
Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
