Republic Caps and Rays 8 Reales 1866 Do-CM VF Details (Chopmark) PCGS, Durango mint, KM377.4, DP-Do47 ("Extremely Rare"). Clearly choice for the designation, with more detail remaining than expected and quite attractive overall. A probably man-made test mark appears between the "E" of "MEXICANA" and the left wing of the eagle and is essentially unobtrusive. Other than the basically uncollectible 1867 Do-CM (2 known), this is the rarest 8 Reales issued at Durango. An eminently collectible example of this great rarity, far more appealing than the few others seen by the cataloguer. We note that a clearly lesser specimen with an unquestionable chopmark realized $3,500 in Stack's Bowers 3/2011 auction (lot 8574), and the F-VF Ex-J. B. Parker specimen fetched $5,500 in Superior's 6/1998 auction (lot 3230).
Estimate: 4000-5000 USD
