Republic Cap and Rays 8 Reales 1827 Pi-JS AU53 PCGS, San Luis Potosi mint, KM377.12, DP-Pi02 ("Excessively Rare"). About Uncirculated with slight friction evidence on the high points, gorgeous deep and rich toning and high rims preserving the surfaces from significant handling marks. The first date struck at the San Luis Potosi mint, one of the most emblematic issues in the entire Caps and Rays series and a major rarity with less than 10 specimens known in all grades. As noted in our previous offering of this same coin (Heritage Auctions 1/2014, lot 24678 for $13,500), the present example is significantly better struck and thus probably more attractive than the Ex-Millenia coin graded MS60 which hammered at $19,000. Another superbly preserved rarity in this popular series, and a coin bound to attract strong interest from specialists of this challenging and popular series.
Estimate: 12000-18000 USD
