Cartagena. Cantonal Revolution 5 Pesetas 1873 MS65 NGC, Cartagena mint, KM716. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated with essentially impeccable surface quality. Struck during the 1873 Cantonal Revolution which attempted to establish a more decentralized political administration and started on July 12 in Cartagena. As a result, this city would be besieged for 185 days and finally surrendered on January 12, 1874. In the process, coins were struck with silver obtained either by requisition or from the silver mines of Marranon. Historical sources indicate that a general amnesty for the previously sentenced counterfeiters of coins was proclaimed in order to obtain their expert collaboration! The 5 Pesetas denomination was the largest coin struck and few survive in such pristine quality as the present coin. As a side note, the authorities of Cartagena requested to the United States government to be recognized as another state of the union, but had to surrender before a formal reply was given. With a twist from history, this issue might well have been become a US local necessity issue! It remains a most interesting testimony of the European turmoil of the period. One of the finest examples seen by the cataloger and rare in this elite preservation.
