The reign of Archelaus I (413-399 BC) was a time of growth and prosperity for the kingdom; however, upon his death, Macedon entered into an anarchic era of short reigns. Aeropos is thought to have been a grandson of Alexander I (498-454 BC), who was appointed as regent for Archelaeus's young son Orestes (399-398/7 BC). He became king after Orestes died (or was killed) in 398/7 BC, but reigned only two or three years until his own death, due to illness or poisoning, in 395/4 BC. His coinage, which is extremely rare and almost never encountered in high grade, is clearly patterned on that of Archelaus, depicting an Apollo head of unusual refinement.
