Helmeted head of Athena right; helmet decorated with sphinx seated right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛEΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Nike standing left, holding wreath in outstretched right hand and stylis in left arm; monograms below both wings. Kern.One of the oldest-known settlements in mesopotamia, Susa became one of four capitals of the Achaemenid Persian Empire in the sixth century BC. Alexander's army captured the city with little resistance in 331 BC. The first Macedonian coins were struck there circa 325 BC, to which this rare stater belongs. The Susa mint continued to produce coins for the Seleucids, Parthians, and Sasanians for another seven centuries thereafter.
