Struck in sculptural high relief on an immense flan and nicely toned. Smoothing evident in obverse fields, otherwise Choice Extremely Fine. From The California Collection. The Kingdom of Elymais flourished as a sub-monarchy along the upper portion of the Persian Gulf from 188 BC to AD 222, at times autonomous from, and subject to, the Seleucid and Parthian Kingdoms. The name derives from the ancient name for the region, Elam, referenced in the Bible. Its earliest ruling dynasty, the Kamnaskirids, produced an intriguing coinage blending Hellenistic and Parthian elements. This remarkable tetradrachm of Kamnaskires III depicts him alongside his wife, Anzaze, both of whom are named on the reverse as king and queen, respectively. The king wears elaborate royal robes covered with jeweled netting, visible with unusual clarity on this specimen.
