PTOLEMAIC KINGDOM. Ptolemy I Soter, as Satrap (323-305 BC). AV stater (18mm, 8.60 gm, 12h). Sidon, 316-315 BC, in the name and types of Alexander III the Great of Macedon. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet pushed back on head, bowl decorated with coiled serpent / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike standing left, holding laurel wreath in right hand and stylis over left shoulder; Σ tin left field. As with the satrapal coinage of the nascent Seleucid Kingdom, gold staters struck by Ptolemy I of Egypt followed the types issued by Alexander the Great up to his death in 323 BC. The important port city of Sidon in Phoenicia, where this beautiful stater was struck, initially came under Ptolemy's control but became a bone of contention between the Ptolemaic and Seleucid realms and switched allegiances several times over the following century.
