Joao V gold 12800 Reis 1731-R XF45 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM148, Russo-226, Gomes-139.10 ("Rare"), Prober–O295. Type 2 Shield (Italic). Delicate friction on the high points of the bust account for the assigned grade, but a premium coin for the designation, with clean surfaces showing fewer than the expected handling marks and a well-struck and choice reverse. Another extreme rarity in the Brazilian Colonial series, the 12800 Reis 1731-R with the Italic shield was likely struck late in that year since most of the known specimens of the date show the earlier Oval shield (Type I). Perhaps 5 examples of the present coin are known, of which two of the finest have been offered by Heritage Auctions! We feel indeed privileged to offer what is likely the second finest specimen known of this key dobra. The finer piece, also offered by us, was certified AU53 by NGC and hammered at $90,000 5 years ago (Heritage Auctions 9/2009, lot 20287). It showed slightly less friction on the bust, but its reverse was a tad less defined and the present example may well be equivalent in terms of overall eye-appeal. Both clearly outrank the only other piece published, that of the legendary Ex-Carlos Marques da Costa collection later acquired by the Banco de Espirito Santo in Portugal. Representing an unlikely second chance in recent years to secure one of the key issues in the entire dobra series, this offering is bound to attract strong competition! From The Santa Catarina Collection of Brazilian Gold Coins

Estimate: 70000-90000 USD
