Edward VII gold Specimen Sovereign 1909-C SP64 PCGS, Ottawa mint, KM14, S-3970. While the 1908 date is well documented as a specimen-only issue, little is known of its extremely rare 1909 brethren. In terms of appearance, the present coin is very much similar in finish to the 1908 satin proofs, and as such, was likely produced at the beginning of the year in 1909. The surfaces are fully dazzling with radiant satin-texture comprising the fields. As one would expect from a special striking, the design is remarkably crisp, with perhaps the most telling attribute being the impeccable execution towards the rims that leaves a small knifed edge and reflectivity in the recesses of the reeding. Light orange-gold tone befits the eye-appealing. Overall, the appearance is certainly Gem! Indicative of its great rarity, we have only seen or heard of one other example of this type to exist. That piece, from the Bentley Collection sold through Baldwin's in 2012, was later offered through us in our April 2014 CICF auction. A study of images of that coin does in fact confirm the two examples as being produced by the same die (and from the same obverse die as the 1908-C specimen sovereign in this sale!), with a small bow-like die polish mark below the chin being an easily discernable attribute. A coin that is easily worthy of the finest Canadian cabinet with no collection of special-production issues being complete without it!

Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
