Ecuador
Republic gold 8 Escudos 1856-GJ AU55 NGC, Quito mint, KM34.2, Fr-8, Onza-1776. An attractive example for the designation, handsomely toned with limited friction evidence on the high points and substantial luster remaining in the fields, while the scattered handling marks do not detract from the eye-appeal. A one-year type of considerable rarity and historical importance since the last onza struck by Ecuador before the country adopted the French Decimal standard by law of December 5, 1856. Only 6,850 pieces were struck and many were subsequently melted since the aforementioned law stipulated that coins struck to the previous Spanish colonial standard (such as the present issue) would not be considered legal tender after October 15, 1866. Truly elusive and most desirable in this unflawed quality, and bound to elicit great interest.
