German New Guinea
German Colony gold 10 Mark 1895-A MS64 NGC, Berlin mint, KM8, Fr-2. Mintage of 2,000. A hugely popular type for world gold collectors, the beautifully-rendered bird-of-paradise motif featured on the issues of German New Guinea are highly artistic and most alluring. This particular example is stunning in its originality, with lovely reddish tone accentuating sharp devices. Light handling is noted in the reverse fields and affects the technical grade, while doing little to diminish the overall eye-appeal. A scarce coin in any case, well-preserved specimens such as this example are rare and highly desirable. The most recent business-strike example of this type to appear at auction was this past July in a Kuenker sale (Sale 252, Lot 5127), an ex-jewelry piece with neither the technical merits nor eye-appeal of this piece which hammered for 18,500 EUR (approx. $25,000).
Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
