Oliver Cromwell 1/2 Crown 1658 MS64 NGC, KM-PnD27, S-3227A, ESC-447. A wonderful coin with bright yet natural surfaces that retain significant original striking luster. The single finest graded example by NGC. Ira & Larry Goldberg sold a PCGS MS64 in June 2013 (Goldberg 74, 4 June 2013, lot 4391) for a hammer price of $11,000. While technically equals based on the grade, the Golberg example had a somewhat uneven blue tone; this is in contrast to the present specimen, which has very clean surfaces and just light gray toning, giving it arguably better eye appeal. Even in the interim year and a half, though, it would seem the market may have gone up significantly. Kunker sold a coin that they graded mint state for a hammer price of 13,000 euros (over $16,000 at the time). While that coin was certainly nice, it is hard to imagine that it would have been appreciably better than this piece.

Estimate: 12000-15000 USD
