George II gold 2 Guineas 1740/39 MS64 PCGS, Royal mint, KM578, S-3668. A marvel of a coin, easily in the top 1% of all surviving George II 2 Guineas, with breathtaking original luster remaining over the obverse and reverse and a detailed strike that leaves the central hair curls as sharply defined as the peripheral legends. Contact marks, as one typically comes to expect on commercial issues from this period and of this size, are extremely limited with the few instances that exist remaining pleasantly concealed. The reverse is even more astounding and could easily qualify as Gem if judged separately! Very possibly the finest example of this date extant, and possibly the same for the type, with the present coin being the only 1740-dated piece to grade MS64 at PCGS or NGC with a single example of the more available 1739 date also grading MS64 at PCGS. For the specialist, a most-important opportunity thus! From The Law Collection
