George II gold 5 Guineas 1748 MS62 NGC, Royal mint, KM586.2, S-3666, SECVNDO edge. Ex. Goldberg's 48 (14 September 2008), lot 2099. Always popular among world gold collectors, the 5 guinea type is rarely seen in mint state. There have been four graded mint-state examples that have appeared on the open market in the last decade (including the original sale of this piece). Goldberg's sold two in February, 2006 graded PCGS MS64 and PCGS MS62, which sold for hammer prices of $28,174 and $18,261, respectively. Golberg's then sold the present specimen in September, 2008 for a hammer price of $26,000. There was a gap of a full six years before the next mint-state graded example appeared on the market, which was in Heritage's August, 2014 Platinum Night Auction. That piece, graded NGC MS62 sold for an amazing $55,000 hammer price. It's clear that in those interim six years the market for this type went up tremendously. While this price history is by no means conclusive , it does at least suggest that the market has gone up over 100% in the last six years. As such, now may be a good opportunity to acquire a mint-state 5 guinea before the market goes up even more, which would not be surprising because true mint state examples of this type are genuinely very rare. Aside from some slight flan annealing just below the bust, this piece is lustrous and has great eye appeal. From The Empire Collection

Estimate: 20000-30000 USD
