George III gold Proof Guinea 1787 PR64 Cameo NGC, Royal mint, KM609, S-3729, WR-104. The first year of issue for the "spade" guinea, named such for the shape of the crest on the reverse. Highly reflective surfaces contrast well with lightly frosted devices, created the cameo effect noted by NGC. A few light hairlines can be seen under magnification, with the only defect noticeable to the naked eye being a light nick on the bottom jaw line of King George. The light marks in the field before the profile of the monarch are actually from the die, rather than being any post-striking flaws, and so therefore should not be counted against the condition of the coin. A genuinely attractive piece that is likely to arouse the interest of the guinea specialist, as well as the world gold type collector.
