George IV gold Proof Sovereign 1830 PR64 Cameo NGC, Royal mint, KM696 (for type), S-3801 (for type), WR-Unlisted. Reeded Edge - Medal Alignment. For well over 170 years, until the first public offering of the present coin in 2005, collectors remained unaware of any 1830-dated proof coinage for George IV. As a result, this date, except for the pattern issues of William IV, was missing from important works such as Alex Wilson and Mark Rasmussen's landmark catalog on the pattern and gold proof coinage of England. And that's what makes this coin so amazing – it indeed seems to be a numismatic unicorn; a coin that shouldn't exist! But alas, here it is - the lone non-pattern 1830 proof of George IV, and a splendid gold sovereign to boot! A coin of inestimable importance to British numismatics...not only for being unique, but also as a coin that represents the pinnacle of a King's final coinage. That it also happens to also be a sovereign - one of the mostly widely collected denominations world-wide – is truly serendipitous. Regarding condition, this coin's wonderful preservation remains apparent at a single glance. Possibly contained in a box or stored in cloth for generations, the surfaces have acquired a rich cabinet-like cloudiness that wafts around and yet, deep reflectivity remains apparent. Pleasing satin frost accompanies the central motifs and adds impressive contrast when viewed against the surrounding fields. Amazingly, no post-strike flaws stand out without the aid of a loupe. All considered, a true miracle of survival to have been kept this nice while outside the hands of a "knowing" caretaker all this while.
