Victoria gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1839 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS, Royal mint, KM735.1, S-3859, WR-344 (R3), plain edge. Struck with medal rotation. Tied with one other in PR65, with two finer between both PCGS and NGC. Nonetheless, this is the only PR65 that has been on the open market in at least a decade. The closest comparable result that we could find was an NGC PR64 Ultra Cameo, sold by Baldwin's in May, 2014 (Baldwin's 87, 7 May 2014, lot 1357), which hammered at 3,200GBP (about $5,500 at the time). The current piece is certainly far superior to that one, more so than the one grade point difference might suggest, as the Baldwin's example had several distracting hairlines. This is a truly charming coin that has a small nick below the chin of Victoria that we note only for the sake of thoroughness.

Estimate: 8000-10000 USD
