Victoria gold Proof Sovereign 1839 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS, Royal mint, KM736.1, S-3852, WR-302 (R4). Plain edge, struck en medaille. The single finest example of this rare type seen by either NGC or PCGS. An absolutely stunning coin, with no equal having been offered on the market in at least a decade, and very possibly with no equal in existence. The second finest example, graded PR65 Ultra Cameo by NGC, was sold by Ira & Larry Goldberg in 2008 as part of the Millennia Collection and had previously been in the Terner Collection. That coin fetched a hammer price of $17,500, which was an outstanding price at the time. Nonetheless, not only is the present coin conditionally superior to that piece, but the market overall, and for Victorian gold in particular, has gone up tremendously since then. The deeply frosted devices and highly reflective fields are certainly worth noting and cannot accurately be conveyed in just writing or a photograph; this coin needs to be seen in hand to be fully appreciated.
Estimate: 10000-15000 USD
