Great Britain
Victoria Penny 1860 MS64 Red and Brown PCGS, Royal mint, KM749.2, S-3954, Freeman-11 (R17). Obverse 2 - Reverse D. 11.29gm Planchet. A delightful near-Gem of this heavy-flan type with glowing mint red over satiny, minimally marked surfaces. Given the most-unusual weight of the present piece (11.29gms versus 9.3gm standard), it is among the mostly highly prized varieties of the 1860 date, with the Standard Catalog of British Coins assigning a value of £2750. In his landmark book, The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain, Michael Freeman confirms the reason for the value assigned by the SCBC, suggesting only 15-60 examples in all grades exist; a search through archived auction records seems to agree with this assertion - the variety rarely shows at auction! The present example, quite possibly the finest among this paltry group of survivors, should further excite the specialist...for it is not often that great rarity and great beauty intersect. Expect strong competition thus!

Estimate: 7500-10000 USD
