George V gold Pattern 6 Pence 1924 MS63 NGC, Royal mint, KM-PnE121, S-4024, WR-430 (R6). By Bertram MacKennal. Mintage of 3. There were just three strikings of this trial sixpence in gold, each with its striking number hand-etched in to the reverse. On this example, there are actually two notations of its number- there is a "3" engraved to the left of the lion, as well as a faint "3" on the tail, which appears to have been done by some sort of marker. Though there were only three strikings, it is interesting to note that all three were rendered on non-uniform flans. Wilson & Rasmussen provide the weights of each of the examples: #1 weighs 2.89 grams, #2 weighs 3.05 grams, and #3 (this specimen) weighs 3.98 grams. This variance of weights further indicates that this was a trial striking. While the #1 weighs roughly the same as a regular issue sixpence, it is curious that the mint workers decided on the need to strike heavier examples. Nonetheless, this is a piece of the highest rarity, and, in some regards, unique. Aside from the above-mentioned mint-made numbering on the coin, there is essentially no wear or marks worthy of mention. Quite possibly the most desirable sixpence of the 20th century!

Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
